UAAP volleyball: Better communication key to UST's win over FEU, says coach 1

MANILA, Philippines – University of Santo Tomas (UST) barged into the win column of the UAAP Season 82 women's volleyball tournament on Sunday, after making quick work of rival Far Eastern University (FEU).

Sisters Eya and EJ Laure had 16 and 12 points, respectively, as the Golden Tigresses swept past the Lady Tamaraws, 25-20, 25-16, 25-18, in just an hour and 33 minutes.

It was a complete reversal from UST's first game of the season, when they twice squandered a one-set lead and eventually lost to National University in five thrilling sets.

"Number one adjustment na ginawa namin, 'yung constant communication," said UST head coach Kungfu Reyes.

"Mas maganda 'yung naging receive ng mga players namin. Ibig sabihin, lahat ng instructions namin na binigay, nae-execute nila sa loob," he added. "'Yun 'yung nawala noong first game."

Against the Lady Bulldogs last March 4, the Tigresses gave up 8 aces and committed 33 unforced errors, offsetting their big lead when it came to spikes. They cleaned up their act against FEU, with just 20 miscues.

They also put up 45 kills to FEU's 26, and Eya gave full credit to her teammates for how their offense flowed.

"Siyempre, kakausapin din namin 'yung teammates namin na constant, tulad ng sinabi ni Coach Kungfu," she said.

"Hindi naman namin magagawa 'yung isang bagay nang wala sila. Kumbaga, bawat puntos namin, dahil sa kanila. Kung 'di dahil sa set, receive nila, hindi namin magagawa 'yung mga puntos na ginagawa namin," she added.

Moreover, their constant communication helped them recover quickly from when they made errors, said EJ.

"Before the game, nag-usap talaga kami ni Eya na kailanga namin mag-usap sa loob ng court, para mag-cover up kami ng mistakes last game," said the elder Laure sister. "So 'yun talaga 'yung nag-work on kami, sa usap sa loob ng court."

Now with a 1-1 win-loss record, the Tigresses are looking forward to building on the win – by sticking on what has worked for them.

"Sa laro na 'to, nakita 'yung strength ng team namin, na once na mag-usap kami, lalabas at lalabas 'yung magandang performance sa isa't isa," said Eya.
