MANILA, Philippines – Marinerong Pilipino withstood a challenge from a feisty ADG Dong-Mapua University squad for an 83-69 victory on Monday in the 2020 PBA D-League Aspirants Cup at the Paco Arena in Manila.

Jamie Malonzo, the former De La Salle University standout, had an impressive debut with 23 points, 11 rebounds, 6 steals, 4 assists, and a block.

The Filipino-American forward missed the Skippers' first game of the season as he still had to fix some papers to gain clearance. But he made an immediate impact for the team, and his three-pointer with 3:38 left gave them a 75-63 lead that took the fight out of Mapua.

"Malaking tulong si Jamie sa amin and hopefully, maging consistent siya every game," said coach Yong Garcia.

Juan Gomez de Liano had 18 points on 4-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc, along with 11 rebounds and 4 assists. Alfred Batino had 14 points and 7 rebounds, while Dhon Reverente had 9 points and 5 rebounds in the win.

The unheralded pair was crucial in Marinero's third-quarter push, where they built a 55-38 cushion.

"Ang importante para sa amin, natapatan namin ang energy at effort ng Mapua," said Garcia.

Laurenz Victoria had 16 points, five rebounds, and two assists for the Cardinals in their debut in the developmental ranks.
