For one night, the country’s top athletes traded in their track suits for ternos, suits and barongs as the Philippine Sportswriters’ Association recognized their brilliance in its annual awards night at Manila Hotel on Friday.

A bulk of the national contingent that won the overall title in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games was on hand to receive its collective Athlete of the Year plaque, an extraordinary citation given the team’s record-breaking performance at the regional competition.

Pool hero Efren “Bata” Reyes was also present to receive his Lifetime Achievement Award, joining young stars Thirdy Ravena (Mr. Basketball), Sisi Rondina (Ms. Volleyball) and Jack Animam (Ms. Basketball) in adding star power to the event.

“Napakalaking halaga nito para sa’kin,” Reyes said. “Biro mo, hanging ngayon nakikilala pa din ako.”

2020 Tokyo Olympic gymnast Carlos Yulo was given the President’s Award for his feat at the world artistic gymnastics last year.

The national boxing team, currently competing in an Olympic qualifying tournament in Jordan, was cited National Sports Association of the Year.

Here are some of the photos from the awards night.
