MANILA, Philippines—GlobalPort head coach Pido Jarencio and star guard Terrence Romeo were quick to downplay their shouting match in the third quarter of their PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinal game against the Magnolia Hotshots on Tuesday.

The two traded barbs at the team bench after seeing a 20-point lead evaporate, with Magnolia taking a 54-53 lead with just three minutes to play. Romeo, playing in just his second game back after dealing with an injury, had to be separated from his coach.

They were quick to bury the hatchet, with Jarencio even jokingly bumping Romeo as the player headed to the official's table to sub in early in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for the Batang Pier, they would fall short as Magnolia completed a 20-point comeback for an 86-79 win, advancing to the semifinals.

"Naka-shoot sila, hindi kami naka-shoot, so nahabol," Romeo said after the game. "Gumanda 'yung depensa nila, tapos maganda 'yung ikot ng bola nila. Medyo hindi kami naka-shoot, especially ako. Wala, ang layo talaga. Wala pa talaga sa timing."

Both Romeo and Jarencio made it clear after the game that their dust-up in the third quarter should not be seen as the reason for the loss.

"Siguro, misunderstanding lang," Romeo said after the game. "Kasi alam mo naman si coach tsaka ako, pareho lang din namin gusto manalo. So lahat naman 'yun para sa team. Kumbaga, gusto namin pareho manalo."

"Meron lang kaming hindi napagka-intindihan. Pero wala, off the court walang problema. Alam naman natin talaga na si Coach Pido ay sobra talagang ano na coach, gusto niya talaga manalo every time.

"Minsan nagmumukha lang na hindi gaanong OK pero normal lang 'yun, normal lang sa amin. Normal lang sa player at sa coaches."

Jarencio said virtually the same thing.

"Wala 'yun. Alam mo, 'yung ugali na gusto mong manalo, and then 'yung bata, winner din," said the coach. "Minsan, nagkakaroon talaga ng mainit na diskusyunan, pero it's part of the game. It's also part of the process na dini-develop 'yung team."

As far as both Romeo and Jarencio are concerned, there is no problem between them and the air has been cleared.

"Walang issue. Walang issue 'yung team," Jarencio stressed.

Romeo added: "Normal lang 'yun na nangyayari sa parehong taong gustong manalo. So hindi na dapat palakihin pa or what. Wala akong galit kay coach."
