MANILA, Philippines -- New Adamson University head coach Rogelio "Onyok" Getigan has high hopes for the Lady Falcons, after they earned their breakthrough victory in the UAAP Season 81 women's volleyball tournament on Sunday.
Getigan took over as Adamson's head coach on Friday, after the the team's management decided to part ways with Airess Padda who called the shots for the Lady Falcons for the past two seasons.
He steered Adamson to their first win, sweeping National University (NU), 25-15, 25-19, 25-22, at the Araneta Coliseum.
"Hindi talaga ako prepared sa laban na ito eh," admitted Getigan, who was at a different competition when he learned of his promotion. He only met with the Lady Falcons on Saturday, and has yet to talk with Padda.
He is not planning to make a lot of changes to the team, and instead they will still follow the system that Padda has already installed.
"May kaunting ipipihit lang tayo," said Getigan. "So 'yun lang ang pinaka-plano ko. May kaunting babaguhin lang, palitan ng tao."
In terms of his goals for the team, however, Getigan is not holding back.
"Gusto ko sila mag-champion talaga, 'yun ang goal ko talaga," said Getigan, who also coaches King's Montessori School and the Adamson' girls team, and has won three Palarong Pambansa titles.
"'Yun talaga ang gusto ko talaga. Minsan hindi ko binabanggit, pero laging nasa ulo ko," he stressed.
Adamson has a long road ahead if it hopes to reach its new coach's goal. The Lady Falcons still only have a 1-3 win-loss record, putting them in the league cellar. They also have a tough schedule ahead, with games against Far Eastern University, Ateneo de Manila University, and University of the Philippines -- all Top 4 teams.
But their new coach is prepared to guide them through a tough season, and is bringing with him years of experience from a very successful career in the high school ranks.
