MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATED) Adamson University opened the post-Air Padda era by making quick work of National University (NU), 25-15, 25-19, 25-22, to secure it first victory of the UAAP Season 81 women's volleyball tournament.
Padda was replaced by Onyok Getigan last Friday, after two seasons in charge of the Lady Falcons.
The victory on Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum was Adamson's first of the season after dropping their first three assignments.
Bern Flora led the Lady Falcons with 15 points on 13 kills and two blocks. Eli Soyud added 12 points, and Joy Dacoron scored 10 points, including the match-winning running hit.
"Wala namang bago, kasi assistant coach naman ako," said Getigan, who admitted that he has yet to hold a formal practice with his team after taking over. "Gina-guide ko lang ang mga bata. Gusto ko lang ibalik ang kumpyansa nila."
It was a swift victory for the Lady Falcons, who opened up big leads over the young Lady Bulldogs in each of the first two sets, then held on for the win in a tighter third set.
Adamson built a 19-15 lead off a Flora kill, before the Lady Bulldogs cut the deficit to 1, 19-18, after rookie Princess Robles scored a hit off Thang Ponce. NU last threatened at 19-20, when Gelina Luceno checked a hit off the Adamson blockers.
But a clever drop shot by Soyud sparked a crucial 3-0 blast by Adamson, capped by an offspeed hit by Chiara Permentilla. That gave them another four-point lead, 23-19, and the Lady Falcons cruised from there.
"Alam ko ang kahinaan nila at kalasakan nila, so 'yun ang nag-guide sa akin para i-coach sila kanina," Getigan said afterward.
Robles led NU with 12 points, while Luceno, Audrey Paran, and Ivy Lacsina each contributed 7 markers. NU stayed within distance in terms of attacks, trailing just 34-31. But Adamson had a big lead in terms of blocks, 11-3, and the Lady Bulldogs also gave up 27 free points from their errors.
It was NU's second straight loss, dropping them to 1-3 in the season.
