MANILA, Philippines -- University of Santo Tomas' campaign in UAAP Season 81 was dealt a huge blow after Fil-Italian spiker Milena Alessandrini suffered an injury to her left knee in their game against Far Eastern University on Saturday.

Alessandrini collapsed following a bad landing late in the second set, with the Golden Tigresses clinging to an 18-17 lead.

She held onto her left knee, obviously in pain, and was stretchered out of the court and back to the dugout. The initial diagnosis was an injury to the MCL (medial collateral ligament) in her left knee.

Alessandrini, last season's Rookie of the Year, is headed to the UST Hospital for an MRI. Rookie Rachel Roldan replaced her in the game.

It is a brutal development for the Golden Tigresses, who have been tabbed as title contenders this year on the strength of their powerful trio of spikers -- Alessandrini, Eya Laure, and graduating veteran Sisi Rondina.

This is not the first time that Alessandrini suffered a serious injury; she also missed a long stretch of games in Season 80 due to a dislocated right shoulder.

Alessandrini is averaging 15.6 points per game in UST's first three assignments of Season 81.
