The fates of 4 teams are on the line, as the elimination round of the PBA Philippine Cup wraps up at Araneta Coliseum on Friday.
GlobalPort welcomes back Terrence Romeo when the Batang Pier clash with Phoenix at 4:30 p.m., while Barangay Ginebra battles Rain Or Shine at 7 p.m.
Rain Or Shine, win or lose, will book a best-of-3 series.
GlobalPort, win or lose will qualify for the quarterfinals; which seed it falls to depends on which outcomes emerge on Friday.
Here is where 4 teams in danger of being ousted early stand:
- If Ginebra wins, it clinches a spot in a best-of-3 series; if it loses, coach Tim Cone and co. will have to go through a play-in game to determine whether they advance or not.
- Any outcome keeps Blackwater’s season alive, except if both Phoenix and Ginebra win.
- Any outcome keeps TNT’s season alive, except if both Phoenix and Rain Or Shine win.
- Phoenix must win to survive; if they lose, the Fuel Masters are eliminated outright.
Alaska and NLEX are awaiting their best-of-3 opponents, as San Miguel Beer has secured the top seed and Magnolia No. 2.
Meralco and Kia have been eliminated.
"In our minds, this is a do-or-die game," Cone said in an interview posted on Spin.ph.
"I can't see us winning a knockout game for eighth and then beating San Miguel with a twice-to-beat advantage."
Besides the intrigue that goes with which teams advance or not, Friday is a must-see playdate as the clubs in action welcome back their marquee names.
After his stint with Gilas Pilipinas, Matthew Wright returns for Phoenix at a crucial time.
For GlobalPort, the Batang Pier get to see Romeo play in his season debut after a knee injury sidelined him for some 5 months and kept him out of the first 10 games of the Philippine Cup.
