MANILA, Philippines -- Commissioner Willie Marcial on Thursday said he plans to suspend the referee who made a controversial call -- and upon review, an incorrect call -- towards the end of the PBA Philippine Cup game between NorthPort and Phoenix.
The referee had called an offensive foul on NorthPort's Sean Anthony with just 47.8 seconds left to play, thus negating the three-pointer that the player had drained -- a basket that would have given the Batang Pier a 99-96 lead.
Phoenix went on to win the game, 98-96. The next day, however, the PBA Technical Group admitted that the offensive foul "was a wrong call."
"It was an unfortunate mistake by the referee in calling the offensive foul and we regret the wrong call made," the PBA said in a statement.
Marcial told reporters that he is already planning to sanction the erring official, who already got an earful from the Commissioner during the game itself.
"Sa akin, mali 'yun," he also said.
Marcial revealed that he plans to suspend the referee, perhaps for as long as one conference.
