MANILA - Boxing champion Jerwin Ancajas recently intensified his endurance training by running up the hills of Magallanes, Cavite, with more than two months to go before his mandatory title defense against Ryuichi Funai.
Boxing coach Joven Jimenez said their morning runs up the road in the Calabarzon (Cavite-Laguna-Batangas-Rizal-Quezon) region is part of their vascular endurance training.
This prepares Ancajas for the tougher portion of their camp.
“Tumatakbo kami nang malayo sa bundok dito sa Calabarzon,” said Jimenez. “Maganda doon kasi mataas ang bundok.”
Jimenez said they've already worked out their training plan, especially now that Ancajas' IBF junior bantamweight title defense against Funai has been confirmed.
Ancajas will be making his seventh title defense against Funai in Stockton, California on May 4.
Team Ancajas wanted all bases covered, especially after the Filipino champion settled for a split draw against Alejandro Santiago Barrios in his previous bout.
“Mabuti at puspusan ang training naming ngayon. Nakafocus nang husto si Jerwin,” said Jimenez.
