New Philippine Olympic Committee president Ricky Vargas wants to bring in former PBA chairman Patrick Gregorio as the sports body's secretary-general.

Vargas said he will recommend Gregorio, TNT’s alternate team governor and former executive of Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, for the position when the POC convenes on Monday.

“He’s a close colleague of mine and I’ve been working with him for so long,’’ Vargas said.

Gregorio is currently vice president of the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP), the sport's national governing body headed by Vargas.

According to POC bylaws, candidates for secretary general must have held the same position, or been president or vice president of their respective national sports federation.

“Without thinking. I can’t say no to Mr. Vargas,” Gregorio said when asked if he would accept the offer.

Meanwhile, Vargas also plans to recommend to the 12-man POC board pencak silat chief Karen Caballero as Vargas' deputy secretary-general.

Jose Cojuangco Jr. will formally turn over the POC presidency to Vargas during the same board meeting.
