MANILA, Philippines – The University of Perpetual Help Altas are deep in preparation for the NCAA Season 95 men's volleyball finals, even as the defending champions still have over two weeks left before they return to action.

The Altas earned an automatic ticket to the best-of-3 finals after sweeping the elimination round.

The rest of the semifinals – Arellano University, Emilio Aguinaldo College, or De La Salle-College of St. Benilde – will battle in a stepladder format to determine Perpetual Help's opponent for the crown.

The Altas completed a 9-0 sweep of the elimination round after a 25-14, 25-15, 25-18 triumph over Colegio de San Juan de Letran last February 13. Since then, they have been waiting for their foes as the NCAA Management Committee suspended games due to the novel coronavirus threat.

The Management Committee has proposed that games will resume on March 16. Still, the Altas have to wait a little longer for their finals foe to emerge.

"Maganda na magbabalik na uli ang games ng March 16, pero kami mag-aantay pa din kasi may two playdates pa ang men's team, and then may stepladder pa," said Perpetual Help coach Sammy Acaylar.

Acaylar and the Altas are aiming for another strong finish this season as they target a 13th men's volleyball title, which would equal the record currently held by Letran.

It would also be their third consecutive title.

"We do regular practice and tune-up games against commercial teams and UAAP teams to stay in focus," Acaylar said.

"We will correct all the lapses and errors in plays and improve to almost perfect receive, defense, and blockings," he added.

Acaylar will bank on top MVP contender Louie Ramirez and ace setter EJ Casaña in their bid to retain the crown.
