MANILA, Philippines – Joseph Sedurifa has become the barometer for No. 3 Makati-Super Crunch during their quarterfinals series against No. 6 Bulacan in the 2020 Chooks-to-Go MPBL Lakan Season.
"He is the leader of the team," said Makati coach Beaujing Acot. "If Joseph is calm, the team is calm. He is doing something intangible, not the seen statistics, but the intangibles of bonding everyone."
Sedurifa's leadership proved vital after Makati had to forfeit its homecourt advantage, as the Guadalupe Viejo Gym was deemed unsafe for the players by the league.
"Malaking bagay yun kasi iba maglaro kapag nandoon sa homecourt eh. Naging motivation na lang namin yun na nawala yung advantage namin," said Sedurifa.
Sedurifa's minutes have gone up in the postseason, and so have his numbers.
In the elimination round, Sedurifa averaged just over 8 points in 22 minutes. So far in the playoffs, he has posted 14 points, 10 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.5 steals in 33 minutes of game time.
"Playoff time na eh. Bilang isa sa mga beterano dito sa team, ipinapakita ko lang sa kanila na playoff is a different game. Need ng leader, so I stepped up," he said.
In Game 2 of their best-of-3 series, Sedurifa had 11 points, a season-high 13 rebounds, and 5 assists without a single turnover.
He helped Makati to an 86-78 win over the Kuyas, sending their team to the semifinals.
Leading by just 5, Sedurifa sparked an 8-2 run to give Makati control of the game, 80-69.
"Work hard lang ako palagi. I don't mind the statistics, bonus na lang yun eh. Basta ang mindset namin dito, winning," said Sedurifa.
Makati will play Manila-Frontrow in the semifinals.
