MANILA, Philippines – Five runners will run a grueling 102-kilometer ultramarathon, taking the path of the infamous Bataan Death March, to raise funds for scholars.

Joshua Suarez will be joined by Ferdie Cabiling, Junn Besana, Paul Pajo and Alden Meneses on March 5 in the ultramatahon dubbed as “Bataan LIFE March 2011”.

The ultramarathon is set to give irony to the Bataan Death March where tens of thousands of American and Filipino soldiers were forced by Japanese forces to march from Mariveles to Capas, Tarlac during World War II.

Instead of finishing the run in Capas, the 5 runners will extend their path up to San Fernando, Pampanga to raise P500,000 for the Real LIFE Foundation scholars.

Last year, Suarez ran the entire highway to raise P132,000 for the scholars. He finished the run in 16 hours.

“This race is bigger than me. It’s about putting deserving young scholars to school," he said.

The race route will involve running non-stop for hours under the moon and the sun.

The run will begin at 9:30 p.m. on March 5.
