MANILA, Philippines -- NLEX guard Kiefer Ravena was admittedly surprised when Gilas Pilipinas interim coach Mark Dickel named him captain of the Philippine national team, but it was a challenge he gamely embraced.
The 26-year-old Ravena will skipper the squad for the February window of the FIBA Asia Cup 2021 qualifiers. They take on Indonesia on the road on February 23.
"After practice, Coach Mark named me team captain, and of course, I was surprised," Ravena said in an interview on "The Score."
"(But) I was really ready to accept the challenge of trying to lead the future of Philippine basketball," he added. "Of course, our direction is going straight to the 2023 World Cup."
"Hopefully, I can challenge myself to lead them in the best way I can."
But Ravena said he won't shoulder the leadership responsibility all by himself, as veteran players like Marc Pingris, Troy Rosario, and Roger Pogoy are also there to help guide the young squad.
