MANILA, Philippines — After a controversial week, Ricci Rivero joined Gilas Pilipinas practice for the first time on Monday at the Meralco Gym.
The athletic swingman, who is on leave from the De La Salle Green Archers, participated in drills for the first time after being a mere observer in previous training sessions.
Though not an official member of the “23 for 23” pool, Rivero is nevertheless welcome to practice with Gilas, provided he gets clearance from La Salle.
Last week, he told Gilas coach Chot Reyes that he has been cleared and arrived early to practice on Monday night.
Plenty of players showed up to Monday’s practice, with the Gilas veterans in full force as their FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifier drawing closer and closer.
June Mar Fajardo, Troy Rosario, Gabe Norwood, Allein Maliksi, Carl Bryan Cruz, Kevin Alas, Kiefer Ravena, Japeh Aguilar, and Jayson Castro were all present.
Matthew Wright, Roger Pogoy, and Jio Jalalon were in street clothes.
Aside from Rivero, the other up-and-coming players in attendance were: Juan Gomez de Liaño, Kai Sotto, J-Jay Alejandro, Arvin Tolentino, Kenneth Tuffin, Jayvee Mocon, Paul Desiderio, and Will Gozum.
Carl Tamayo of National University attended practice for the first time.
