Six days after his 28th birthday, Bago City, Negros Occidental’s Aston Palicte moved up the junior-bantamweight rankings in the World Boxing Organization (WBO), following his eliminator-match victory against Puerto Rican Jose Chiquiro Martinez at the Viejas Casino in Southern California.

Coming into the fight, Palicte was ranked second in the WBO, while Martinez was fourth.

After a slow opening round, Palicte knocked down the Puerto Rican fighter three times before the referee stopped a vicious barrage from the Pinoy boxer in the second.

“Nakita ko nasasaktan na siya so hindi ako natakot na ibuhos lahat. ’Yung program ng coach ko sa sparring pa lang 11 rounds, 12 rounds. ’Yung sparring partner magaling kaya Hindi ako nag-isip na ibuhos lahat kahit second round pa lang,” Palicte said.

Palicte spent the month training alongside Manny Pacquiao in Los Angeles. Besides a first-hand look at the Pacman’s work ethic, he said the fighting senator gave him a little incentive.

“Sabi niya sa akin ’pag may KO may bonus ako. Secret namin,” he said.

Palicte’s most recent fight was a draw against countryman Donnie Nietes for the vacant WBO super-flyweight world title.

Nietes eventually captured that belt on New Year’s Eve, setting up a potential all-Pinoy world title fight and rematch, one that Mighty is ready to take on.

“’Yun ’yung sinasabi ko dati, hindi pa tapos ’yung laban. Hindi ko naisip si Nietes. Ayun na nanalo na ako, Nietes next. Trabaho lang ito . . . ‘Yun ’yung ranking, wala tayong magagawa,” he said.

The Roy Jones promoted fight was streamed on UFC fight pass under a new partnership.

Palicte said he’ll wait for promoters to set the timeline for his next fight, which he hopes is a world title shot.
