MANILA, Philippines – University of Perpetual Help pulled off a stunning come-from-behind victory against Arellano University in the NCAA Season 95 women's volleyball tournament on Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
In a rematch of last season's finals, the Lady Altas recovered from a two-set deficit to upset the Lady Chiefs, 22-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-12, 16-14.
In the process, they handed the defending champions their first loss of the tournament. Arellano entered the game with a spotless 5-0 win-loss record.
Perpetual and Arellano are now tied at No. 2 in the standings with identical 5-1 slates, leaving idle De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde as the lone undefeated team at 5-0.
Jhona Rosal led the way for Perpetual Help with 15 points, while Jenny Gaviola scored 7 of her 12 points off kill blocks. Dana Persa added 10 markers.
Gaviola, the converted setter, also delivered the game-clinching block for the Lady Altas against Princess Bello.
Regine Arocha had 23 points and 10 receptions, while Bello accounted for 16 markers. Arellano had a 58-40 advantage in kills, but the Lady Chiefs also committed a whopping 48 unforced errors in the game.
Perpetual Help had the edge in blocks, 12-5, and aces, 10-5. It took them two hours and two minutes to complete the win.
The Altas made it a double victory for Perpetual Help, as the three-peat seeking men's team remained unbeaten in six matches after a 28-26, 23-25, 25-21, 25-19 win over Arellano.
In the juniors division, Arellano took the solo lead with a 25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 18-25, 15-10 win over titleholder Perpetual, raising its record to 6-0.
