San Beda University turned back Arellano University 1-0 Tuesday to reign supreme in NCAA men’s football at Philippine Football Federation Training Center in Carmona, Cavite.
Jessie Semblante, a former high-school goalkeeper who first learned the sport playing in Don Bosco in LIloan, Cebu, delivered the winning goal off a penalty kick in the 87th minute to hand the Red Booters the title.
It was San Beda’s 21st crown tying it with La Salle, a former NCAA member, as the winningest football program in the league.
San Beda wasn’t as fortunate in juniors’ action, though as it was dethroned by Arellano 1-0.
Jimmen Catap scored a goal in the 22nd, sealing the Braves’ first high school title since they joined the league almost a decade back.
It was also Catap who drew the ire of San Beda keeper Chevy Celeste, who was ejected for a dirty tackle in the 76th.
The Cubs were never the same, as the Braves hung tough to preserve the win.
