MANILA, Philippines – Lyceum of the Philippines University made quick work of Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC), 25-18, 25-17, 25-15, for its second straight win in the NCAA Season 95 women's volleyball tournament, Tuesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Lady Pirates improved to 2-3, putting them within reach of the Final 4. Lyceum is seeking its first-ever semifinals appearance in women's volleyball since joining the league in 2011.
"Yung schedule game namin, masyadong napalaban kami kaagad sa top four. Sunod-sunod kaagad iyon, 'yung No. 1 (Arellano University), yung No. 2 (De La Salle-College of St. Benilde)," said coach Emil Lontoc.
"Yung No. 3 (San Beda University), na-postponed iyon. Pero maganda na rin iyon kasi makakalaban namin 'yun sa last game," he added.
It took the Lady Pirates just 67 minutes to complete their rout of winless EAC (0-4).
Mary Joy Onofre led the scoring for Lyceum with 13 points on 9 kills, 2 blocks and 2 aces, while Monica Sevilla scored 10 of her 11 points on attacks. Alexandra Rafael added 10 points.
Rookie setter Venice Puzon shone with 15 excellent sets and four service aces.
Cathrine Almazan had 12 points on 9 kills and 3 blocks to lead the way for the Lady Generals. Meanwhile, skipper Lauren Cabrera had 9 points.
But EAC gave away 25 points to Lyceum off their own errors, and had just 26 attacks in the game to 40 for the Lady Pirates.
EAC's men's and juniors' teams fared better on Tuesday, as both are unbeaten in four games.
Danrich Melad had 21 points as the Generals downed the Pirates, 25-20, 25-23, 25-17.
Mhar Miranda and Dominic Puentespina each scored 16 points to power the Brigadiers in a 25-18, 26-28, 25-22, 25-17 conquest of the Junior Pirates.
