MANILA – Filipino boxer Romero Duno scored a lightning quick knockout of his Mexican opponent, Yardley Armenta, in a lightweight showdown at the Forum in Los Angeles, California on Saturday night.
The 22-year-old Duno, who fights out of Cotabato City, unleashed a series of punches to the body that sent Armenta to the canvas after barely a minute.
The referee officially put a stop to the bout after a minute and one second of the very first round.
"Ang plano talaga namin is tapusin ng three to four rounds, or five rounds," Duno told Steve Angeles of ABS-CBN News after the fight. "Pag akyat ko sa ring, medyo na-excite ng kaunti, kaya ayun ang nangyari."
"Hindi ko naman inakala na ganoon lang kadali," he added.
Duno admits he would have wanted more time to show off his skills, especially to the Filipino fans who were in attendance.
"Hindi ko po masyadong naipakita lahat. Pero blessed naman ako dahil nanalo pa rin ako," he said.
"Sana sa susunod na laban, panoorin po niyo, siguro mas mahaba na siguro 'yan," he added.
Duno improved to 16-1 with the victory, with 14 of his wins coming by way of knockout.
