MANILA, Philippines – There were no bridges burned when Evan Nelle transferred from San Beda University to De La Salle University.
San Beda head coach Boyet Fernandez told ABS-CBN News that Nelle personally bid goodbye to the whole Red Lions team on Tuesday morning, the same day that he confirmed he was leaving the school.
"It's a sad day for all of us, losing him," Fernandez said of Nelle, who made the Mythical Team as a sophomore while leading the NCAA in assists in Season 95.
"But we do respect his decision. We wish him well," he added.
Nelle averaged 10.2 points and 6.7 assists for the Red Lions, who swept the elimination round only to fall to archrivals Colegio de San Juan de Letran in three games in the finals.
The point guard missed San Beda's practices this past week, and rumors swirled that he was on the verge of transferring. He eventually confirmed that he was set to move to La Salle in a bid to "get out of his comfort zone."
Nelle played for San Beda for the past eight years, winning several titles with the Red Cubs.
"With his departure, it created a deep hole in our point guard spot," said Fernandez.
"It will be a challenge to our guards who are left behind to fill the big shoes that he left behind," he added.
