NCAA: Perpetual Help outlasts Lyceum in 5-set women's volleyball thriller

MANILA, Philippines – University of Perpetual Help battled toe-to-toe with Lyceum of the Philippines University before hacking out a 25-27, 25-23, 26-24, 14-25, 17-15 win on Tuesday in the NCAA Season 95 women's volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Jhona Rosal came through with 20 points, including three service aces, for the Lady Altas, who needed two hours and 11 minutes to post their second straight victory.

"Itong game namin ngayon, kumpara sa San Sebastian, unti-unti kaming nag-i-improve," said Perpetual coach Macky Cariño.

Yanca Tripoli added 19 points, Jenny Gaviola had seven blocks to finish with 10 points and tossed in 13 excellent sets for Perpetual.
Shyra Umandal contributed three of the Lady Altas' 14 blocks.

"Nakuha namin nang konti, pero kailangan namin maging consistent. Anyway, malayo pa naman ang liga, ang susunod namin na kalaban eh Mapua. Tatlong araw pa, marami pang dapat pag-ensayuhan," said Cariño.

The Lady Pirates fell to 0-3, as they suffered another heartbreaking five-set defeat.

Alexandra Rafael, Ciamelle Wanta and Joy Onofre each scored 15 points, while Jacquiline Acuña had five blocks for an 11-point outing for the Lady Pirates.

In men's play, Louie Ramirez dropped 23 points while Ronniel Ramirez added 15 as reigning champion Perpetual scored a quick 25-22, 31-29, 25-20 win over Lyceum. The Altas are unbeaten in three starts.

Kirth Rosos had 10 points to lead juniors titleholder Perpetual in sweeping Lyceum, 25-17, 25-17, 25-15 for a 3-0 mark.
