MANILA, Philippines – Kai Sotto will not be able to join Mighty Sports in the 2020 Dubai International Basketball Tournament, the team announced on Tuesday.
Mighty Sports pointed to "unresolved logistical and scheduling issues on his part" as the reason for Sotto's withdrawal from the team, just days before they are set to open their campaign.
The 7-foot-2 Sotto is currently in Atlanta, where he is training at The Skills Factory.
The teenager was initially tipped to team up with naturalized Filipino Andray Blatche and former Alab Pilipinas import Renaldo Balkman, along with PBA veteran Beau Belga, to anchor the frontcourt of Mighty Sports.
Despite Sotto's absence, the team remains upbeat that they can play at a high level in the tournament.
"Our team is still complete, with a formidable lineup of young, athletic, very talented, and inspired amateur players," Mighty Sports coach Charles Tiu said.
Thirdy Ravena, Juan Gomez de Liano, and Dave Ildefonso are among the amateurs who are expected to carry the fight for Mighty Sports. Aside from Balkman, import McKenzie Moore will also reinforce the team.
Mighty Sports will open its campaign on January 23 against the national team of the United Arab Emirates.
