MANILA, Philippines – The bantamweight showdown between Nonito Donaire and Naoya Inoue last November earned Fight of the Year honors from the Boxing Writers Association of America.
The bout, held at the Saitama Super Arena in Japan last November 7, saw Inoue triumph via unanimous decision against "The Filipino Flash" after an explosive 12-round affair.
Donaire went toe-to-toe with the younger fighter throughout the bout, but suffered a knockdown in the 11th round that sealed the fight in Inoue's favor.
Judges scored the bout 117-109, 116-111, and 114-113 for the Japanese sensation, who took home the Muhammad Ali trophy after winning the final of the World Boxing Super Series tournament.
Inoue also unified the WBA, IBF and The Ring Magazine bantamweight titles.
Other matches considered for the honor were: Gennadiy Golovkin-Sergiy Derevyanchenko, Manny Pacquiao-Keith Thurman, Andy Ruiz-Andy Joshua I, Errol Spence Jr.-Shawn Porter and Josh Taylor-Regis Prograis.
