MANILA, Philippines -- Filipino club Ceres Negros FC dispatched Myanmar's Shan United, 4-3 on penalties, Tuesday evening in Yangon, to advance into the next round of the 2018 AFC Champions Cup.
With neither side managing to get on the board during regulation, a thirty-minute extension was needed.
Three minutes into extra time, a William Nyakwe own-goal off a Stephan Schrock attempt gave the Pinoy side the upper hand, but Shan's Patrick Asare found the equalizer just six minutes later.
After the thirty-minute extension, Ceres and Shan once again found themselves at a stalemate, prompting a penalty shootout.
Penalty conversions from Carlie De Murga, Schrock, Mike Ott, and Bienve Marañon sealed the deal for The Busmen, who headed to the next preliminary round.
There, they'll be facing Australian club Brisbane Roar for a chance to advance to the playoff round.
Ceres meets Brisbane at the Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre in Brisbane, Australia on Monday, January 23rd.
