MANILA, Philippines – Mighty Sports head coach Charles Tiu is upbeat about his team's chances in the Dubai International Basketball Tournament, given his squad's mix of young and veteran players.
Tiu has tapped naturalized Filipino big man Andray Blatche, along with imports Renaldo Balkman and McKenzie Moore to anchor the team. Also included in Mighty Sports' line-up are collegiate stars Thirdy Ravena and Juan Gomez de Liano, and PBA veteran Beau Belga.
"I think we are deeper, we have more talent," said Tiu, who steered Mighty Sports to a third-place finish in the Dubai tournament last year.
"We have imports who can all contribute, and Andray is considered a local player," he noted. "And then we got a bunch of young guys, up-and-coming players."
"So the team is good," he stressed. "It's just a matter of if we get to put things together and figure each other out in a short period of time."
The team has been training and practicing daily with the exception of teenage sensation Kai Sotto, who will join the squad in Dubai on January 21.
Belga, one of the veterans on the squad, said they have a "good chance" in Dubai.
"Mixed 'yung grupo eh," he noted. "We have the young guys, we have Andray, Kenzie. They're tried and tested when it comes to the international stage."
The team leaves for Dubai on January 21, and will compete starting January 23.
