NCAA: Arellano downs San Beda to lock No. 3 seed in men’s volleyball

Arellano topped San Beda 25-17, 22-25, 25-16, 25-12 on Tuesday to finish at third place after the elimination round in NCAA men’s volleyball at FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.

Jesrael Liberato paced Arellano with 18 points including 15 off kills while captain Christian Joshua Segovia and Christian dela Paz contributed 16 and 11 hits, respectively, as the Chiefs finished the preliminaries with a 7-2 (win-loss) record.

They will face the second-seeded College of Saint Benilde Blazers (8-1) in the semis.

Defending champion University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, which leads the tournament with an 8-0 record, has a chance to sweep the competition should the Altas beat Jose Rizal University on Thursday.

Emilio Aguinaldo College (5-4) is the No. 4 seed.

The Red Lions, who finished their campaign with a 2-7 card, played minus coach Nes Pamilar, who died Saturday due to heart failure.

Pamilar’s assistant, Ariel dela Cruz, took over coaching duties.

In juniors’ action, Arellano beat San Beda, 25-15, 25-21, 23-25, 25-19, but missed the final 4.

The Braves finished tied for fourth with the Emilio Aguinaldo Brigadiers and Junior Blazers with identical 5-4 slates but fell out with an inferior tiebreaker.

EAC advanced to join UPHSD (8-0), Letran (6-2) and Lyceum (6-2) in the semifinals.
