By the Numbers: Overseas Filipinos in the Middle East (2018)
There were 2.18 million overseas Filipinos in the Middle East in 2018, according to latest data from the Department of Foreign Affairs. This figure includes permanent migrants, overseas Filipino workers (documented/temporary migrants), and undocumented migrants.
Workers comprised 2.11 million or 96.7 percent of Filipino migrants in the Middle East in 2018, followed by undocumented migrants (62,950 or 2.9 percent) and documented migrants (8,979 or 0.4 percent).
The Middle East was the second top source of Filipino migrants' cash remittances in 2018 (22.9 percent share of total remittances) after the Americas.
The Philippine government expressed concerns for OFWs in mideast countries after Iranian Major-General Qassem Soleimani, head of the elite Quds Force, and Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis were killed in a US drone strike outside the Baghdad airport in Iraq on January 3, stirring tensions between Tehran and Washington.
