PHNOM PENH - The Cambodian government said Monday that 1,592 tons of illegally imported plastic waste found in July have been shipped back to the United States and Canada.
Most of the waste -- 1,322 tons -- came from the United States, and the rest from Canada. Locally owned Chungyuen Plastic Manufacture Co. was fined $250,000 for importing 83 containers of waste since Sept. 2018.
Prime Minister Hun Sen has declared that Cambodia will not become a dumpsite for waste from foreign countries.
Such dumping has increased in Southeast Asia since China last year banned the import of plastic waste, prompting waste exporters to seek alternative destinations.
At a foreign ministers' meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations held last month in Bangkok, members pledged to reject illegal transboundary movement of hazardous waste from developed countries.
