PARIS -- Three Filipino couples set the stage on fire in the Showdance competition of the 10th Gay Games here.
The Filipino dancers competed with 17 other couples, mostly from the US and Europe, each securing a spot in the finals last Friday.
"We are very happy na yung buong Team Philippines made it to the Finals. And it’s the first time for all of us to participate in the Gay Games. And I think, we represented the Philippines very well," said fourth placers Jan Gabriel Cerezo and Michael Marquez Jr.
"Nagulat sila na sa Philippines yung Same Sex Ballroom dancing is nagbibihis babae kami," he said.
(They were surprised that in the Philippines, we dress as women for same sex ballroom.)
Dancesport Master of Ceremony Pete Meager, who has been competing in Europe for years, congratulated the Filipinos.
"It just goes to show love is love and we’re all delighted that they’ve come to join us and they’ve been absolutely fantastic! They’ve broken the boundaries and they’ve really shown how fun this competition can be whilst being such exquisite and excellent dancers," he said.
The Filipino couples also competed in Latin dance on Thursday along with 39 other couples. They ended up with a silver for Leoniel Enopia and Exeqiel Vargas, fourth place for Cerezo and Maquez and, fifth for Calamaya and Mapacpac.
Philippine representative Emmanuel David got a silver in swimming.
