BEIJING - North Korea has approved a munitions production plan as part of the country's war deterrent at a meeting of the ruling party, guided by leader Kim Jong Un, state-run media reported Sunday.

The Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea approved "major key munitions production plan indices" during its gathering Saturday, the official Korean Central News Agency said.

The Rodong Sinmun, the newspaper of the party, ran photos showing Kim participating in the meeting.

The party examined "the strategic mission of the major units for coping with the military situation in the vicinity of the Korean Peninsula and the potential military threat," KCNA said, but did not go into detail.
