MANILA - No Filipinos were hurt in the explosion from a suspected gas leak at a Florida shopping mall on Saturday, the Philippine Consulate there said.

“We called various members of the Philippine community in Plantation, Florida and reviewed social media and no member of the Philippine community is reported among the injured as a result of the explosion," it said in a statement.

The blast, which wounded 21 people, sent debris flying across the parking lot of the Fountain Plaza shopping center, damaging an LA Fitness gym, numerous cars and blowing holes in neighboring buildings in the city of Plantation, about 50 kilometers north of Miami.

Deputy fire chief Joel Gordon told reporters two of the injured were in serious condition after the blast, one of whom had potentially life-threatening injuries.
