Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday called for international solidarity to combat the new pneumonia-causing coronavirus during a video conference with leaders from the Group of 20 economies, state-run media reported.

"The international community needs to work as one to fight" the virus, Xi told his G-20 counterparts, urging other countries to take steps to boost trade, such as cutting tariffs, to shore up the global economy, according to the Xinhua News Agency.

The new virus was first detected late last year in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, known as a business and transportation hub with a population of around 11 million.
