MANILA - The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Tuesday that the remains of the Filipino couple who drowned in the Maldives would be flown to Sri Lanka for embalming.

The remains of Leomer and Erika Joyce Lagradilla would then leave Colombo on board a SriLankan Airlines flight on its way to Manila, the Philippine Embassy in Dhaka said.

Embassy Chargé d’Affaires LV de Guzman said a relative of the couple would be also on the same flight scheduled at 12:50 a.m. (Manila time).

The Philippine Honorary Consulate in Male, she said, helped arrange the repatriation of the remains. A representative was present during the sealing of the caskets.

The newly-wedded couple were on their honeymoon after they tied the knot on Dec. 18. They drowned off Dhiffushi island while snorkeling.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. had said the government would shoulder the expenses through the Assistance to Nationals Fund.
