NAHA, Japan - Four China Coast Guard vessels entered Japanese waters around the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea on Thursday morning, the Japan Coast Guard said.

The vessels, one equipped with what appeared to be machine guns, entered the waters around the uninhabited islets at around 10:10 a.m., prompting the coast guard to ask them to leave.

It is the first intrusion into the waters by the Chinese authorities' ship since Oct. 5, marking the 26th such day for this year.

The Japanese-controlled islets are also claimed by China and Taiwan, which call them Diaoyu and Tiaoyutai, respectively.
