‘Fall of Brutal’ team wins competition to design human rights memorial
The winners of the Freedom Memorial Museum Design Competition, administered by the Human Rights Violations Victims’ Memorial Commission (HRVMMC) and launched together with the United Architects of the Philippines, were awarded at the National Museum on Wednesday.
The team of Mark Angelo Bonita, Mark Anthony Pait, and Wendell Crispo bested 217 other teams from around the world, taking home P1-million grand prize for designing the winning entry, “Fall of Brutal.”
Meanwhile, the team of Joselito Gutierrez, Abdulmari Imao Jr., Gabriel Ortega, and Mari Francesca Lorica took home the People’s Choice award.
The Freedom Memorial Museum will be built on 1.4 hectares of land inside UP Diliman beside the College of Fine Arts Gallery where, according to the HRVMMC, it “shall house memorabilia, artifacts, educational materials, audiovisual content aimed to immortalize the triumphs and sacrifices, the blood, sweat and tears of Filipinos and allies in the struggle for freedom, democracy and human rights.”
The museum, the flagship project of the commission, will serve as a memorial to the victims of human rights violations during Martial Law.
