In some ways it was literally a race against time.

As troops prepared before midnight on Saturday to deploy personnel to guard the National Capital Region's borders, doctors and nurses assigned to COVID-19 cases were fighting to keep the virus from adding to the number of fatalities.

As the sun was rising on Sunday, members of the Joint Task Force of police and different units of the armed forces were trying to put in place their checkpoints while health officials were preparing for their statement that will announce the additional cases to the 111 patients.

By the end of the day, the tally was up to 140. Likewise, the death of patients 9, 12, 54 and 39, brought the death toll to 12 nationwide.

If this day is any indication, it will take a lot more than checkpoints to reverse the tide over the course of the 30-day lockdown ordered by the government.

Here are random scenes from around the metro on day one.
