Less talk, less mistake

Less talk, less mistake

Less talk, less mistake. Ergo, snub debates.

This appears to be the tack taken by a number of candidates in the 2019 midterm elections who are doing well in pre-election surveys.

Although it may be a good political strategy, the move not to join televised debates isn't good for our democracy.

Debates help voters choose who among the candidates deserve to sit in public office.

Unlike political ads which highlight only the positive side of a candidate, debates can reveal not only the pluses but also the minuses of candidates.

In sponsoring free debates, media outfits help inform the electorate about the candidates and their stand on issues.

An informed electorate is important to strengthening our democracy. Candidates for public office should thus take advantage of these free debates.
