MANILA &mdash; For the first time, the Philippine Coast Guard and Vietnam Coast Guard conducted a maritime exercise to demonstrate their capabilities in responding to emergency situations.The maritime exercise took place eight nautical miles from Corregidor Island at the mouth of Manila Bay and happened amid tensions in the West Philippine Sea.Both the Philippines and Vietnam have territorial claims in the West Philippine Sea.Included in the training were fire fighting and search and rescue operations.&nbsp;The scenario involved a ship on fire with people needing to be rescued.The Philippine Coast Guard and Vietnam Coast Guard quickly responded with their vessels and began pumping water onto the burning ship.A helicopter also circled the area to locate victims who had fallen into the sea.<a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/2024/8/5/vietnam-coast-guard-arrives-in-manila-set-for-joint-drills-with-pcg-1445">READ: Vietnam Coast Guard arrives in Manila, set for joint drills with PCG</a>After &nbsp;the victims were spotted, the Philippine Coast Guard and Vietnam Coast Guard swiftly launched rescue boats.For the Philippine Coast Guard, maritime exercises are crucial for fostering proper regional cooperation among ASEAN countries, especially concerning issues in the West Philippine Sea.&ldquo;Magkakaroon po tayo ng magandang cooperation, collaboration sa mga claimant ng West Philippine Sea, and being &nbsp;an ASEAN nation also na maganda na magkaroon tayo ng at least iisang direction which is sa rules-based approach,&rdquo; said CG Captain Laurence Roque of the BRP Gabriela Silang.Captain Roque also mentioned that during the maritime exercise, they recognized the need for the PCG to strengthen aerial surveillance.&ldquo;Mahalaga po yung aerial surveillance kasi mas malawak po yung area na kanilang nakikita and hindi lang po yung helicopter yung gusto ko tukuyin but also &nbsp;yung paggamit ng drone,&rdquo; added Captain Roque.He said these would help PCG vessels get a better idea of the emergency or incident they are responding to.After the maritime exercise, the Vietnam Coast Guard ship sailed home.
