Villanueva: Work-from-home law can ease Metro Manila traffic woes

MANILA &mdash; Putting Metro Manila under a &quot;state of calamity&quot; will not solve the region&#39;s monstrous traffic problem, Sen. We feel it every single day. Government should listen and employ the help of experts from all sectors... Clearly this is a crisis that needs to be addressed. Adding more roads is not the only solution,&rdquo; said Poe, chairperson of the Senate Public Services Committee.The senator issued their statement following the call of the Management Association of the Philippines (MAP) to declare a state of calamity in Metro Manila over its worsening traffic.&ldquo;Mass transit should be improved and expanded. Public Electric Vehicles are already being utilized in many countries. Our air quality can certainly improve if public buses are converted to e-vehicles,&rdquo; she added.Senate Majority Leader Joel Villanueva meanwhile stressed the need to observe Republic Act No. 11165 or the Work-from-Home law to ease the country&rsquo;s traffic situation.&ldquo;Companies and employees should be allowed to arrange for flexible work arrangements instead of having employees report physically in the office every day and losing working hours due to traffic,&rdquo; Villanueva said. &nbsp;&ldquo;It is also important for the government to study the proposal on the gradual conversion of public buses into electric vehicles and how this will help make the lives of Filipino commuters more convenient and lessen the environmental impact of traffic congestion in the country,&rdquo; he added.Last year, Villanueva filed Senate Resolution No. 859, which calls for the Department of Transportation (DOTr), Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) to review and revisit the government&rsquo;s traffic control program.A previous study estimated that the Philippines loses P3.5 billion economically daily due to the traffic problem in Metro Manila.
