Philippine National Police chief Ronald Dela Rosa on Sunday urged policemen to do their duties to make the New Year revelry the "safest ever".

"I am appealing to your sense of urgency. Let us make this new year's celebration the safest ever for everyone by achieving ZERO death and the lowest number of injuries," Dela Rosa said in a statement.

Dela Rosa also underscored the importance of command responsibility among ranking officials.

"Please continue pressing on your subordinate commanders to perform best. Remember always that the numbers of casualties in your respective areas of responsibility is reflective of your kind of leadership," he said.

Communications Secretary Martin Andanar earlier reminded the public to adhere to the nationwide firecracker ban.

"Kailangan nating sundin lang iyong Executive Order ng ating mahal na Pangulo na umiwas sa mga bawal na paputok," Andanar said in an interview on state-run Radyo Pilipinas.

(We have to follow the Executive Order issued by our President against the use of firecrackers.)

"(Kung magpapaputok) Kailangan doon lang tayo (sa mga designate areas) para makaiwas tayo sa disgrasya at para tayo ay makapag-celebrate ng New Year ng masaya at buo ang ating mga daliri," Andanar said.

(If we will use firecrackers, we have to stay in designated areas to avoid accidents and make our New Year celebrations festive without any missing fingers.)

In July, President Rodrigo Duterte signed executive order 28 that limits the use of firecrackers nationwide.
