MANILA - Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte led the commemoration rites for the 122nd death anniversary of the country's national hero Jose Rizal in Davao City, as her father Rodrigo Duterte was unable to attend the event.
Mayor Duterte read her father's Rizal Day message as the President was advised to rest, according to Malacañang.
The commemoration rites this year centered on the theme, ‘Rizal 2018: Wisdom and Compassion, Foundation of A Free and Progressive Nation, the Presidential Communication Operations Office said.
"It is my sincere hope that this year's commemoration will inspire everyone to emulate Rizal's patriotism in their own ways by supporting the government's development agenda and our campaign against corruption, criminality and illegal drugs," the Davao City mayor said, reading her father's message.
The ceremony was also graced by Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles, Education Secretary Leonor Briones, as well as other local and national government officials.
"May Rizal's courage and patriotic fervor inspire us all to develop compassion for our fellowmen as well as foster a greater desire to always think of the common good so that we may be able to progress as a people and as a nation."
The President had previously attended the Rizal Day rites at the Luneta park in Manila.
This year it was Vice President Leni Robredo who graced the wreath-laying ceremony in Luneta.
