LEGAZPI CITY, Albay - Three people, a couple and their son, were killed in a landslide in Legazpi City, Albay late Friday night, the first confirmed casualties of a tropical depression that has since been downgraded into a low pressure area.
The victims were identified as Mauro Alegre, 25, his wife Mia, 20, and their son Marco, 3.
Local officials said mud set off by heavy rains due to Usman came crashing down into the family's house in Purok Dos, Barangay San Francisco past 11 p.m.
Usman was a tropical depression when it made landfall in Eastern Samar around 6 a.m. Saturday and had affected parts of the Bicol region on its approach. It has since been downgraded into a low pressure area.
Village councilor Richard Azur Dose told ABS-CBN News the victims were staying in a room when the incident occurred. Rescuers dug out their bodies around 4:30 a.m Saturday.
Based on PAGASA's latest advisory, moderate to heavy rains would still prevail over CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, the Bicol Region and Aurora even as Usman has weakened.
