The US issues a travel advisory on the Philippines. Meanwhile, the DOH admitted that it has a tough time trying to restore trust in vaccines. And the Visayas braces itself for an incoming storm. Here are the stories ANC will be covering today:
MIAA General Manager Ed Monreal said there is no cause for alarm after the US Department of Homeland Security issued a travel advisory on the Philippines because of weak security protocols at the NAIA. Monreal said they will continue to follow international standards on airport security. US envoy to Manila Sung Kim said he is confident the DOTr can improve NAIA security measures and said they are collaborating closely with officials to improve aviation security. The DOTr said better security equipment for NAIA is on its way. How will this affect business, tourism and the country’s image abroad?
Probing a killing
The Comelec said it could place Daraga, Albay under its control after the murder of Ako Bicol party-list Rep. Rodel Batocabe. Does this confirm the killing is related to politics? PNP spokesman Senior Supt. Bong Durana will be on Headstart to give updates on the probe. Batocabe’s son said they would continue his legacy.
All for a mauling
Iloilo Rep. Richard Garin and his father incumbent Guimbal Mayor Oscar Garin are in real hot water for mauling a police officer. The Philippine National Police (PNP) has cancelled the Garins’ permits to carry firearms. PNP Chief Dir. Gen. Oscar Albayalde also ordered the confiscation of their guns. President Duterte also ordered the DILG to file charges against the Garins. Rep. Garin is the husband of Janette Garin, a member of the Cabinet during the Aquino administration.
The Dengvaxia scare has spooked the populace. Health Undersecretary Eric Domingo said immunization coverage for all kinds of vaccines this year slid to 40 percent due to the scare. Charges have been filed over alleged deaths due to Dengvaxia. But let’s remember that it has not been established if the deaths were caused by the vaccine. In the meantime, deaths due to measles and dengue are going up at an alarming rate despite the current immunization program. What should the DOH do to convince people that vaccines save lives?
Tropical Depression "Usman" is due to hit land this afternoon. ANC will provide timely updates on the weather system and will keep in touch with local and disaster officials to check on their readiness, preparations, and the effects of the storm in their areas. Storm signals are still up and Usman is expected to intensify before it hits land.
