MANILA - Pet owners on Wednesday urged the public not to use fireworks as these cause unnecessary stress to animals.
Dog owner Sharon Yap said she supports the no to firecracker campaign as her lhasa apso experienced uncontrollable trembles and diarrhea due to stress.
The Philippine Animal Welfare Society also said loud noise may bring trauma to pets.
"Dogs have highly sensitive hearing. The noise from fireworks can make them uneasy and feel stressed. Furthermore, it can make our pets sick and traumatized," PAWS executive director Anna Cabrera said.
Pet owners can make their pets more relaxed during the new year celebration by allowing them inside the house.
"If it is unavoidable in your area, put your pets inside your home and make sure they are out of reach from firecrackers," Cabrera said.
Playing music instead of playing with firecrackers is a safer alternative for both animals and humans, Cabrera added.
Experts also advised against putting dogs on a leash because it might strangle them if they jerked from the noise.
Ideally, stay with them so they feel secure, Cabrera added.
