When asked by barangay officials in Davao City when the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections will take place, President Rodrigo Duterte joked that it will not happen for years yet, so they will have to work harder.
"There will no longer be any barangay and SK polls, not until 2025, or 2030. Go ahead and work, do not surrender," Duterte said in the local vernacular, during a Christmas celebration with barangay officials in his home city.
Duterte also asked barangay officials to support his daughter, Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte.
"I hope you will help Inday. I have not seen anyone else (who is fit to lead)," he said.
Earlier in his speech, Duterte vowed to give a P10,000 bonus for village chiefs, and P3,000 for councilors in Davao City.
The cash gift will be coming from a friend's donation to the national elections.
"I did not accept the donation. He did not accept it when I returned it, though. I did not report it as electoral contribution," he said in Visayan.
Since Duterte was told by the donor to use the money at his own discretion, the firebrand leader decided he will use the money to help the poor with their hospital bills.
"I also reserved some for you," he told barangay officials, and said they should not worry about possible complaints of graft and corruption.
"That is money which I returned, but was not accepted," he reiterated.
Grocery packs will also be given to barangay captains.
In return, Duterte asked them not to engage in corrupt activities and never to be involved in the illegal drug trade.
