The chief of police of Catmon municipality in Cebu was shot dead as he tried to check on a commotion in a neighboring town Saturday afternoon.
Senior Inspector Alexander Nuñez was on his way home to Cordova when he stopped in Carmen to break up a skirmish among a group of brothers, initial investigation by police showed.
Nuñez reportedly saw one of the brothers, identified as Carlito Jayson, holding a gun. Carlito tried to shoot him but missed.
The police chief reportedly fought back, killing Carlito. This was when Carlito's brothers decided to hold down Nuñez and kill him using his own gun, witnesses said.
Police then pursued the assailants identified as Kardo, Jaime, Carlo and Camilo.
During the chase, police killed Kardo and Camilo while Jaime escaped.
Carlo is in police custody.
