MANILA - The gunmen who killed Cong. Rodel Batocabe and his police escort also wounded 7 elderly citizens who were attending the late lawmaker's gift-giving activity in Daraga, Albay.
Among those wounded were Ellen Lapon Mansos, 63; Marina Belolo Mediavillo, 78; Florencita Lomerio Mendones, 67; Haydie Non Llorca, 61; Gregorio Loterte Mediavillo, 79; Jesus Llana Medes, 73; and Nelia Mancera Millena, 71.
The elderly victims sustained gunshot wounds after the assailants fired at Batocabe and his police escort SPO2 Orlando Suruiz Diaz.
Congressmen pledged at least P5 million in exchange for information that will lead to the capture of Batocabe's killers.
Batocabe's fatal shooting is "likely politically motivated", the justice department said, citing the initial probe of the National Bureau of Investigation.
Police have yet to identify a motive in the killing.
Batocabe, 52, was eyeing Daraga's mayoral seat in the 2019 midterm polls.
He recently voiced concern that rivals in the local mayoral race were using armed groups to influence the vote, regional police official Arnel Escobel told Agence France-Presse.
