MANILA - Six areas were placed under tropical cyclone warning signal number 1 late Friday night as severe tropical cyclone Nina intensified, according to state weather bureau PAGASA.
The areas placed under the warning signal were:
- Camarines Sur;
- Northern Samar; and
- Eastern Samar.
In its 11 p.m. weather advisory, PAGASA said Nina was packing maximum sustained winds of up to 115 kilometers per hour (KPH) with gusts of 145 kph.
The storm was spotted 570 kilometers east-northeast of Borongan, Eastern Samar as of 10 p.m.
It was moving west-northwest at 19 kph.
PAGASA said moderate to heavy rainfall is expected within the storm's 400-kilometer diameter.
The state weather bureau warned that travel is risky over the seabords of northern Luzon. Waves are expected to go as high as 4 meters.
PAGASA said the storm is expected to make landfall in Catanduanes on Christmas Day.
